Colorado Narrow Gauge for Trainz ’06:
Rebirth of an Old Favorite (Continued)
By Alfred Barten
Setting Up the Logging and Lumber Operation
The logging and lumbering operation has two interactive components: the log train, which loads and brings logs to the sawmill, and the lumber train, which loads lumber at the sawmill and transports it to Gunnison and beyond (or Ouray and beyond if you prefer). I converted John’s original log camp by adding the SS MultiLOG Deck 2 loader, which is built into TRS2006. I also added a second log camp in a different direction from the first. It’s reached by way of a switchback, but is much closer to the sawmill. Thus I named the two camps, Log Camp Near and Log Camp Far.
The sawmill doesn’t receive logs directly. You have to dump them into the millpond. I used Log Dump NG diesel for this purpose. It, too, is built into TRS2006.
At Log Camp Far I provided enough flatcars and a second locomotive for loading a second lumber train, though you may find yourself busy enough just going back and reloading the logging skeletons. I provided Peter Pardoe-Matthews's coal-fired Climax locomotives for hauling the logs at both camps. I also included an idler flat between the log skeletons and the locomotive. It was common to provide some sort of separation between logs and locomotive in case the logs slid forward unexpectedly.
Idler flat provides separation from logs in case load shifts.
To set up the log loading, open the Objects menu in Surveyor, select the question mark icon and click the loader. The Properties dialog opens. Make selections as follows:
- Rate: 2
- Start Amount: 18
Log dump and sawmill.
The log dump seems to work without setup, but I did provide values for consumption as follows:
- Rate: 2
- Start Amount: 0
To set up the lumber loading, open the Objects menu in Surveyor, select the question mark icon and click the sawmill. The Properties dialog opens. Make selections as follows:
- Amount: 18
Setting Up the Passenger Operation
Interactive passenger cars by Elvenor.
We can thank the late Elvenor for making the passenger operation such a thing of beauty. His D&RG; interactive coach, combine and baggage cars are gorgeous. Combined with his Central Station, Pitkin Station and set of 41 late 19th century western passengers we have the perfect combination for the Colorado Narrow Gauge passenger service. I used Prowler's Bumble Bee (yellow) C-16 Consolidation #268, a yellow reefer and Elvenor's cars for a five-car train to handle all my passenger and perishable express service.
I replaced all the existing stations with Central Station at the two terminals and Pitkin Station in between. I set each one up a little differently from the next, but all follow the pattern shown.
To set up a station, open the Objects menu in Surveyor, select the question mark icon and click the station. The Properties dialog opens. Make selections as shown. For Gunnison and Ouray I chose Standard Station, whereas for the others I chose Small Station. I varied the departing passengers and initial passengers numbers from station to station.
I varied the amounts from station to station, using higher values at Gunnison and Ouray.
Availability
I've added the Colorado Narrow Gauge route to my downloads page, where it is available free of charge. All dependent content except Prowler's is available at the DLS. Prowler's is available at his San Juan Trainz Workz website (http://steammachine.com/prowler/).
As a convenience to those who desire it, I've also packaged the route, sessions, locos and rolling stock and all available dependent assets on a CD, which is available at the VR Pro Shop for a nominal cost of $5 plus shipping.
Cheers,
Al
