Building The IRTS
Day 5 - First Run
By Alfred Barten
Mini Map feature shows baseboards. When zoomed way in, it also shows track layout.
Having placed the first few baseboards and making critical decisions regarding stations and grade level river crossings, it’s now time to place ALL the baseboards, lay the basic track loops and make a test run.
In the past, I would have placed temporary markers at each baseboard edge, as I did in Day 4 for the first few baseboards. As I got going on the IRTS, I decided to try working with the built-in Min Map that Trainz provides. This turned out to be far superior to my earlier method.
I proceeded clockwise around the layout, placing baseboards and a single line of track and keeping track of the progress via Mini Map. Once complete, I went over the entire route to make sure the track was all connected and reasonably smooth and free of acute turns.
All baseboards and basic single-track main line are now in place. Note that the Mini Map rotates to match the viewer’s orientation.
My final step was to hop in the cab of a train and give the route a simple test. The most important things I was looking for were distances between stations and overall time to run the entire route.
I was satisfied that the number and placement of stations was what I wanted – around two minutes of fast running time between stops.
The overall nonstop time of the inner loop at 70 mph was around 15 minutes. If I were to make all the stops, the overall time would be closer to 18 minutes. This is fine for what I want.

I took a second trip, this time using the Pennsylvania DD1 electric and a string of Pennsy heavyweight coaches. At 71 mph, the complete nonstop trip around the outer loop took over 17 minutes. The time it takes to complete a run is a matter of personal preference. I really don't want to spend more than about 20 minutes in a driving session.
Pennsy DD1.
