Union Central 2008 (Continued)
By John D'Angelo
Springfield Terminal.
The Limited stops in Springfield and then continues westward to San Angelo.
Crossing the Desert.
The geography changes from green hills to mesa country as the Limited heads west.
San Angelo.
This is the final westward stop before the Limited continues westward via the San Simeon portal.
The eastbound limited is called The Sunset Limited and is generated by the San Simeon portal and travels eastward to the Central City portal. I also use the portals to generate mainline freights eastward and westward across the route. I normally space them apart by 10 minutes to keep the action moving. In addition to the mainline limiteds and express freights, there are lots of opportunities for local freight and passenger operations.
Local passenger trains leave from the Springfield yard passenger tracks. One train heads westward to McCabe’s Beach and then turns around and returns, while the other train heads eastward to Mountain Glen and returns.
East and westbound local trains.
There are many opportunities for freight switching activity as the branch line to Mountain Glen and the town of Black Rock have a number of places for cars to dropped off and picked up.
Cattle car drop at Black Rock.
Loaded cars would be returned to Springfield yard where they would be assembled into large freights for movement east or west to the outgoing portals. Since mainline traffic is continually being introduced onto the route, the engineer will need to check with the dispatcher to be sure they will not be blocking an oncoming train.
Westbound freight ready to go.
When I made this variation, I created it without active industry tracks so that you can decide which goods you would like your industries to handle. There is no session, just the route, so that you can decide what running gear to operate with. The United Central and Union Central are among my favorite routes and I hope you get lots of enjoyment out of this “Standard Only” version.
Have a great 2008!
John
