Exploring the Wellsville, Addison & Galeton

By Alfred Barten

IF YOU LIKE OPERATING SHORT LINES, with the wealth of switching activity involved, you’re sure to like the Wellsville, Addison and Galeton (WAG) or the "Sole Leather Line" route for MSTS by Paul M. Raynes. The current version, 2, of the route was released in 1907 and is available at Train-Sim.com. The route has extensive mileage, industries, beautiful scenery and loads of activities. You cab even get a fleet of WAG rolling stock from Train-Sim.com that includes a 132 Ton GE center cab diesel, GM F7 A-B diesel units, a batch of boxcars, a gon, a flat car, a tank car and two cabooses. There are two "still-active" interchanges with the Erie and one with the New York Central (NYC). There are several other "abandoned" interchanges with the NYC, Coudersport and Port Allegany (C&PA;), New York and Pennsylvania (NY&P;), and Baltimore & Ohio (B&O;).

The prototype WAG existed from 1954 to 1979 in Western New York State and Pennsylvania. Its origins date to 1885 as the Buffalo & Susquehanna. Raynes describes the simulation in his readme notes as a “fairly accurate representation” of the line.

The above map of the prototype appears as a splash screen while the route is loading. The map below is a schematic of the route as modeled. The essential difference is that the MSTS version has been rotated 90 degrees CCW and the leg from Genesee to Wellsville has a change of direction.

The following table lists the points of interest beginning at Wellsville and ending at Addison. Two branches – Galeton to Burrows and Gaines Junction to Ansonia - are embedded in the list. Included are features such as sidings and depots at each location.
