Getting And Keeping Their Attention:
A Good Use For iPortals (Continued)

By Alfred Barten

Setting Up Wisconset Module for Continuous Running

Getting back to the Wisconset Module, I added an iPortal at each of the points where the track ends at the layout edge (this IS a module, after all). The idea was that if a train runs off into oblivion it will reappear at another iPortal and keep on running.

To place an iPortal, open the Object menu in Surveyor and search for iPortal Basic (or you can use the iPortal Tunnel if you prefer). Then drag the track point to meet the iPortal track. That way the iPortal track will match the track you are using. Next select the Question mark button on the menu and click the iPortal track. A dialog box appears.

Before you attempt to enter info into the dialog box, consider what iPortals you plan to have, what their names are going to be, and whether you want to have the train stop upon leaving the iPortal or to keep running. I have three iPortals named SW-Portal, Grants Portal and Hobbes Portal. I "programmed" each as follows:

Now when I launch the Wisconset Module I have a long pulpwood train that I set in motion and allow to run. I've learned to set switches in anticipation of sending it to a preferred iPortal when needed and possibly to stop the train before it reaches a section of mainline I want to use without interference from the pulpwood train. So far this system has been working well.

Sending a train to someone else's computer is similar except that you will need to identify the user and and set up an Internet connection. You may want to use iChat to communicate in real time with the other person. Both will be the subject of a future article.

Cheers,

Al
