Who we are and what we're about

By Alfred Barten, Publisher VMRJ

WELCOME to Virtual Model Railway Journal. Feel free to call us VMR Journal or VMRJ. Our goal is to celebrate desktop computer railroading, or train simulation if you prefer. Our particular interest is the creative involvement with virtual railroading. Because of this we’ve included the word model in our name. Model railroading has always been a hobby of creative involvement.

We also find ourselves focused on Trainz, the railroad simulator from Auran. Trainz, more than any other simulator, brings out the modeler –- the creative participant –- in the end user. That’s because Trainz has made it easy to create layouts, or routes, that look great, can be any size, and offer enormous operating potential. Trainz, like its closest competitor, Microsoft Train Simulator, comes with a powerful 3D modeling program, gmax, which lets you create your own model locomotives, cars, and buildings. Trainz goes one step further by offering an add-on program, Paint Shed, that lets you easily repaint cars and locomotives in any way you like. The Trainz online Discussion Forum gives you the opportunity to meet with many people who enjoy this hobby. You can also download all types of free additions created by your fellow enthusiasts from the Trainz Download Station.

In short, you don’t need to be a tech junky to enjoy and be creative with Trainz. You do need to have an interest in trains, railroads, and railroading. If you do, we can help with the rest.
